Surface Tension (originally Scrimshaw/Traverse City) is a 1980 J/24 that was purchased February, 1988 by Tom Morell. Tom regularly races Surface Tension on Wednesday nights, Commodore's Invitational, Anchorage Cup, and short handed races. Was member of Muskegon J/24 fleet (Fleet 150) from 1992 to 2005. Campaigned as far as 1999 Chicago NOOD races.

Surface Tension may be the "baby boat" in the spinnaker fleet, but is still considered a threat in GRSC series standings. Finished 3rd in the 2015 GRSC Cup, 1st in the 2015 Bluffton Bay Sails Cup, 3rd in the 2015 Pat Clark Memorial Race and 3rd overall in the 2015 Summer Series.

While 70% of annual sailing hours are spent racing, ST can be spotted off Grand Haven enjoying the wind, waves, and beverages. Monday Night Lite races are often attended, teaching future sailors bad habits. Has cruised to Leland and White Lake.

Crewing with Tom (helm & main trim) on Surface Tension Wednesday nights, is Russ Scheil (genoa & spinnaker trim), Jeff Park (bowman), and Todd Johnson (pit - spinnaker handling & twinges).
