The 2026 Maiden Race
The Grand River Sailing Club (GRSC) is honored to announce the 2026 Maiden Race, an event dedicated to celebrating and empowering women in sailing. Since the 1980s, GRSC has supported women’s sailing through dedicated races, educational classes, and community events. The Maiden Race, first held in 2018, continues this proud tradition, inspired by the trailblazing yacht “Maiden” and her all-female crew led by Tracy Edwards in the 1989 Whitbread Round the World Race.
Whether you’re new to racing or a seasoned sailor, the Maiden Race offers a unique and empowering experience on the water.
- Build confidence at the helm in a supportive, all-women racing environment
- Develop teamwork, communication, and tactical racing skills
- Gain hands-on experience in a fun and low-pressure regatta setting
- Connect with an incredible community of women sailors
- Perfect opportunity for first-time racers, friends, and mother-daughter teams
The Maiden Race is more than a competition—it’s about growth, encouragement, and celebrating women in sailing.
Race Format
This is a buoy race designed to test tactical skills and teamwork. All boats must be crewed exclusively by women. Male boat owners may be present on board solely for docking assistance, general instruction, or in case of emergencies.
- One race will be sailed
- Seperate starts will be used:
- Spinnaker division starts first.
- Jim & Main Division starts approximately 5 minutes later.
Post Race Celebration
Following the race, participants and supporters are invited to an awards ceremony and potluck at the GRSC clubhouse along the picturesque harbor front.
A Growing Tradition
- 2018: 4 boats, 20 women sailors
- 2024: 12 boats, 72 women sailors, including mother-daughter teams
- 2025: Expansion with the Spinnaker Division and participation from both local and visiting crews
We warmly invite sailors, boat owners, and sponsors to join us for an inspiring weekend dedicated to the adventure and joy of sailing. Be part of our legacy of promoting women’s sailing excellence.
